Who Goes on Our Tours
Our tours are not for everyone: we ask prospective clients to read our material carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear. The Queen Charlotte Islands are almost as well known for their weather as they are for their Haida history and art ....and its not sunshine we're talking about here! Be it wind and rain or calm and sunshine, guests properly prepared can enjoy our tours. We provide good quality rain gear and rubber boots for those that do not find it convenient to bring their own.
Wildlife is not as prolific as Parks Canada and the popular media would have one think. In the spring and fall, migratory birds and whales move through on their way to and from northern
feeding grounds. We have been fortunate, in the last few years, to have humpback whales feeding in the Hecate Straits for much of the summer but water conditions sometimes make access difficult. Through the mid summer there are fewer birds on the water and whale encounters are less likely. Eagles, deer, seals and other creatures are common but bears are chance sightings, generally seen feeding in the inter-tidal zone on lower tides. Later August and September are better for wildlife, as the salmon returning to the many small streams, provide a feast for much of the local animal kingdom.
The abandoned Haida village sites, Burnaby Narrows and Hot Springs are the focus of most tours so expect these sites to be busy at times. Weather can delay access creating a backlog of groups waiting to go ashore. As only twelve people are allowed on site at one time, we will explore nearby or have lunch while we wait our turn. This can be a bit of a problem on day trips but generally the watchmen and tour operators work well together to find solutions..
Whether you join us for one day or ten days, we will do our best to make your trip enjoyable.
