Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

This week marks the last week of our 2022 operating season, and boy, what a season it has been! The tides changed this year as we watched the doors to Haida Gwaii swing open, and many wondering people came to visit this magical place we call home.

The weather this year was incredible! So much sunshine, warm winds and endless sunsets. The prevailing winds this summer were from the northwest; however, we did see a shift to north and northeast winds, which still bring clear skies, but can make for big seas and ocean spray, keeping our guides on their toes and putting our wet weather gear to the test!

As the oceans start to cool, the rains fall, the salmon find their way home, and the creeks boil with energetic fish.

The pink salmon numbers peak bi-annually, and this year was the busiest. We watched the bears, eagles, sea lions, and seals gather at the mouths of the rivers to get their filet. The coho and chum are next. They will swim further up the rivers than the pinks, laying their eggs in shaded gravel patches. The eggs develop based on the average temperature during the incubation period, which can be between 6 to 12 weeks. When we visit these creeks in the spring, a sprinkle of hemlock needles in the pools will trick the smolt to the surface, which will be a welcome sight and something we will look forward to next year!

Our 2023 schedule is now live! As always, we’re so grateful to be able to operate in Gwaii Haanas, and we look forward to welcoming you and visitors alike next year.
